Simple Homemaking || Grouping Items Together

I have been so excited about organizing our home these last few weeks.  As we are still settling into this new place of ours, I have been so excited to unpack (possibly for the last time ever, a girl can dream!) and settle in.  All is unpacked and everything has been put into its proper area in our home.  Now it is time to give everything a place, organizing it into containers, bins, and drawers. I have been a purchasing, labeling, and sorting machine.  I love how it is all coming together and can't wait to share more with you.  We are hoping to start our major remodel of our home soon, so the house still has a lot of work that needs to be done to make it pretty, so shelves and drawers are old and stained, but I'm overlooking that and embracing order.  I've decided that an organized area will be easier to do a remodel around then an area filled with half unpacked boxes.

All this to say that my homemaking tip for the day is to group like things together.  I went through our office supplies and actually worked through two junk drawers, emptying them and pulling all the items together, and am experimenting now with having all our office supplies in our office area.  No more junk drawers!  All the pens are together, all the erasers are together, all the scissors are together, you get the idea.  If we need something enough times in another area of the home, I may decide to move it to the spot permanently, but if not its home is in the office.  So far I have only had to pull a pen and scissors into the kitchen, other then that all the items stay in the office.

I also was keeping all our extra soaps and shampoos in our laundry room downstairs, organized together.  After a few weeks of this Steve and I realized that we ran out of soap often enough that we wanted to have some soap stored upstairs as well.  Now I have a bin in our master bathroom with extra soap, but the rest stays downstairs.  So if you find it does make sense to store like items in a couple spots in your home, you can easily do that, but try first to have them all collected together in one spot.  This just simplifies and streamlines the functionality of your home.

You don't need items stashed in a variety of drawers for convenience sake, especially for those that are used seldomly.  I used to have rubberbands stored all over my home, in little container in junk drawers, in my craft area, in my bedside table, on doorknobs.  They cluttered things up and were always getting mixed up with everything else.  Now they live in my office.  I do have to go to the office now to get a rubberbands when I occasionally need one, but I don't need one often enough that it is a big deal.

Another perk to this rule is you can see how many of each item you have.  If you collect your items together and find that you have a massive collection of pens and pencils it is so easy to let half (or more) of that collection go.

I'm excited to continue to incorporate this rule as I streamline and organize my home.  I have only generally organized my craft area and will be tackling that in the next couple weeks.  I'm thinking of sharing more room by room tips with you here as I move forward.

Do you think this is something that would work for you? What are your best organizing tips?
